Hey Man, Can I Get My Layup?

Me: Hey Man, Can I Get My Layup?

Bryan: What are you talking about?

Me: My layup. I just shot the basketball and missed and you got the rebound. Give me the ball, so I can do my layup.

Bryan: Wait, you’re telling me that I have to give the ball back to you, so you can do another layup?

Me: uhh, yeah! Is this the first time you have played basketball?

Bryan: Dude, you are smoking crack. That is the dumbest thing that I have ever heard. Why would I give you the ball back, so you can take another shot?

Me: This is how you play. Everyone does it.

Bryan: No they don’t man. I’m from Wisconsin and we never do it like this. It must be a weird Chicago thing.

Then it occurred to me. Here I am chastising Bryan for not knowing an apparently local Chicago shoot-around basketball rule, but there are so many things out there that I do just because I was following someone else’s directions. At the time, it made sense to me to give someone their layup after they missed a shot. But, it was wrong to assume that everyone played that way and that my way was the right way.

At what point do we stop following other people’s directions blindly and start creating our own? I’m ready to start my own, who’s with me?!
